How To Buy A Wedding Dress - A Guide For A Bride

by Anne Michaels

Most women have been dreaming of their wedding day since childhood, and one of the most important parts of that dream is a stunning dress. We all want to feel like princesses on our wedding day, but the reality of wedding gown shopping can make that dream feel like a chore. Here’s how to reduce the stress and find the perfect gown for your big day.

Start early. This gives you plenty of time to select a dress that works well for you and to have alterations done so that it fits like a glove. Don’t forget to take someone with you whenever you try on dresses. After you’ve put on gown after gown, you may lose the ability to look at them with a critical eye.

Remember to take someone with you who’ll be honest about how you look in the most important dress of your life. They should be willing to tell you if a dress isn’t flattering, and help you select one that is.

Before you make an appointment to try on wedding dresses, collect photos that will give you a good idea of the dresses you like best. Find out what shape your figure is and what styles flatter it to rule out styles that aren’t going to work for you.

It’s also a good idea to decide what you’re willing to spend in advance, and stick to your budget. Friendly, enthusiastic sales personnel shouldn’t be allowed to talk you into a costly wedding dress or bring you gowns that aren’t in your price range. Women looking for a budget gown should consider a simple dress, one bought second hand, or one ordered from an online store.

Don’t just think about looks, either. A wedding dress you’re going to wear for most of the day should fit comfortably and be pleasant to wear. Areas of the gown that pinch, itch, or ride up are going to be intolerable after an hour or two.

Book an appointment with a seamstress early, so that she’ll know your dress is coming for alterations. Your gown should never be finished in a rush. That’s more expensive and means your risk of a poor fit is higher.

Pick your dress according to the season and venue. While a long train works well for an indoor wedding, it’ll pick up leaves and other debris if you wear it outdoors. Consider the temperature and weather to choose a dress that’s the right length and weight. You’ll be more comfortable if you do.

Remember to be realistic about sizing. While most of us expect to diet for our wedding day, this can be harder than it sounds. Remember to pick a size that you’ll be able to comfortably fit into, even if it’s not your ideal.

It’s a lot easier to have your gown taken in than it is to have it let out. Remember this, and be sure not to diet after you’ve had your alterations made. That’ll give you the perfect fit on your wedding day.

Most importantly, don’t allow your wedding gown to make you feel stressed or tired. If you’re not enjoying yourself, it’s time to take a break. A great wedding gown will make you feel beautiful, not worn out!
